Tenth victim of Liberia-Gambia football crush dies: hospital

"Another person has passed away," Winnie Scott, the medical director of Monrovia's John F. Kennedy hospital were the injured are being treated, told AFP.

According to Scott another 16 people who were injured in the crush at the Samuel K. Doe football stadium are still being treated but "they are not at risk of dying".

Eyewitnesses said the stadium was already packed at noon local time on Sunday with many people coming early to find a seat for the match.

It is thought that illegal ticket sales and poor security led to many more people being crammed into the stadium than the seating capacity allowed.

Both the Liberian government and football's governing body FIFA have announced they will launch a probe into what caused the tragedy.
